What people think depression looks like:
• Sleeping too much or not at all
• Taking time off work and/or performing poorly
• Avoiding friends
• Avoiding activities
• Inability to care for yourself or others
• Visible sadness
What functional depression looks like:
• Sleeping your usual 8 hours a night, but spending too much of your free time robotically glued to your phone, wasting hours of your day doing literally nothing, waking up every morning overwhelmed and exhausted.
What functional depression looks like:
• Meeting every deadline, staying organized, and achieving goals, throwing yourself into work to avoid thinking about how heavy your boots feel, collapsing from exhaustion by 4 PM wondering whether any of it even matters.
What functional depression looks like:
• Answering every DM and comment, sharing on your Story, and texting with long-distance friends and family to make it less obvious that you are avoiding all in-person interactions or any deeper-than-surface-level discussion.
What functional depression looks like:
• Going for hikes, paddles, walks, and errands, but only alone, bargaining with yourself that if you can just manage this one normal healthy thing, you can go home and speak to no one for the rest of the day.
What functional depression looks like:
• Meal prepping, working out every morning, eating healthy meals, and being a rock star mom for your kid, then climbing into bed at 8 PM because you aren’t capable of doing anything else.
What functional depression looks like:
• A person beaming authentically from the middle of a paddle board, laughing during a hike with their kid, and appearing glamorous and confident in a media interview, because being depressed can look every single way you can imagine.
