Growing up, I was the only Black kid in my small-town elementary school. While I already felt like an outsider, deep inside I had kept a secret I couldn't share with anyone. I felt alone.
As you can imagine, back then, you didn't see or hear a lot about gay people, especially queer Black women. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be an out LGBTQ woman who was happily partnered and raising a child. Back then, I couldn't see a future for myself.
For those of you who may feel uncertain about your future: you have a future. I am living proof of that. You are seen and you are loved. Being your authentic self also matters but only WHEN you are ready. We are here to support you no matter what.
Until then, know that I and countless other out and proud adults and allies will keep fighting for a world where everyone can feel safe to be who they are and love who they love. #NationalComingOutDay đŸłïžâ€đŸŒˆ
