as op mentioned for some nb people to say it can cause more harm than good and it's totally valid, it's cis people that should stay out of this topic because most of the time they can't have an opinion on this without being transphobic/heteronormative.
for example i met many people that wasnt comfortable with us saying "bts gay" ironically but that was totally fine with assuming that they were straight by default, which is heteronormative. personally would never assume someone's gender/sexuality because it's none of my business
but heteronormativity is just as harmful and that's something some of y'all don't understand. if y'all don't like when ppl assume someone's gay then stop assuming they straight. just mind ur business.
