It’s March 1st.
The U.K. reports 35 cases, and looking at Italy, decides to implement a full lockdown.

With no deaths, the media is in an uproar. “LOCK PEOPLE IN THEIR HOMES?!” But the order comes in. /1
There is widespread unrest, but the cases continue to climb, as we were warned they would, and the first deaths start only 5 days later.

Meanwhile Italy looks like its boiling over, and tentatively the media wonder if we did the right thing. /2
March 7th. The govt announces a full quarantine of all borders, as cases hit over 200, for a weeks time. Schemes to support those at home and bring home those abroad are announced. The FTSE slides into it’s boots.

March 10th. The lockdown has been going 10 days, and cases continue to rise.
Hold your nerve is the message, two weeks to see an impact. Hospitals start cross training ICU staff just in case.
An op-Ed calls the govt “mad and useless.”
March 14th
Cases hit 1000 in the U.K., and deaths leap to 43.
While in Italy the death toll soars over one thousand.

As other European nations lock down, the U.K. is seen increasingly as a pioneer.
March 17th.
Cases in the U.K. plateau , and start to fall. Deaths increase sharply, over 100, and the media wobbles- are we doing enough?

March 24th
As death tolls soar in Italy, France and Germany the U.K. sees only a few hundred deaths. New cases are declining rapidly.
Govt institutes local track and trace, and announces plans to start reopening schools in four weeks time.
April 5th
No new COVID deaths are recorded. ICU capacity remains intact, with elective surgery continuing with some precautions.
Govt announces financial support for businesses and airlines, and an infrastructure spend to rebuild roads and bridges during lockdown.
April 30th
With no new cases for 1 week, Test and trace is running well, and mask wearing and social distancing working. Schools are reopened, and shops are modified to allow limited footfall
June 30th
After a month of no new cases, workplaces are modified and reopened, with simple social distancing measures.
The U.K. is hailed as a world leader as the FTSE climbs once more.
July 15th
A spike of cases in London after emergency visitation is allowed again from abroad. London is put into a two week immediate lockdown.
August 1st
Lockdown released once more
September 10th
Large sporting events return, and the premier league kicks off with full stadiums. The FTSE reaches near normal, and businesses eye the U.K. as a safe haven during the pandemic.
October 10th
Having lost just 5% GDP, 200 lives and continuing healthcare services the U.K. weathered COVID with a track and trace system that maintained suppression.
With a vaccine on the horizon an experienced and focussed population get on with near normal until then. /end
