I& #39;ve found myself thinking a lot about this post by @profcikara over the last few hours, and now I& #39;m feeling compelled to amplify the message and provide a bit of a generational perspective /1 https://twitter.com/profcikara/status/1315271234280722432">https://twitter.com/profcikar...
I remember attending my first academic research conferences as a grad student, and how much I craved finding camaraderie with others in sharing our insecurities about our work and our future academic prospects (as someone who has long suffered from imposter syndrome) /2
when I broached such topics with my peers, more often than not I was met with some form of academic bravado (practiced or genuine), one-up-personship, or effort to size up (me as) the competition, which left me feeling quite alone with my insecurities and imposter concerns /3
it is for these reasons I feel compelled to give a shout-out to you younger generations of researchers for being so openly supportive of each other and willing to share your insecurities and vulnerabilities, which I believe were in too short supply as I was coming up the ranks /4
what a precious gift. may you continue to support each other, delight in each other& #39;s successes, and lift each other up even during those times (and especially when) life in academia feels particularly harsh and challenging. /5
and very special thanks to @MaddBlackProf @page_gould and a small number of other colleagues (not on twitter) who were willing to connect with me on this personal level
