Yesterday, TX @MomsDemand volunteers made >11,600 calls, 1,649 of which were bilingual, for #GunSenseCandidates including @SkidonenkoForTX, @Sharon4TX, @LorenzoForTexas, @JoannaCattanach, @Wendydavis, @Ramos4Texas, @lulufortexas, @candacefor24, @ColinAllredTX & @GinaOrtizJones.
I was recently asked why I volunteer for @MomsDemand & @Everytown, with all that is going on now. Gun violence is interwoven with so many of the horrors we are seeing in this period of civil unrest and COVID-19 that I can’t sit this one out. We need a #GunSenseMajorityTexas NOW.
The first wave of COVID-19 never seemed to let up in Texas, and now some experts say we are entering a second wave. Despite peaceful protests, we are still seeing Black Americans shot and killed by police at an alarming rate.
Due to systemic racism, Black Americans are disproportionately affected by gun violence; they suffer 3 times the fatal police shootings of white Americans.
Gun sales are surging, flooding the background check system,
such that the Federal 3-day waiting period elapses, and people who should never have a gun are able to buy them without a background check.
About 4.6 million children live in homes with unsecured guns, and of course more kids are at home, which could lead to more unintentional shootings, as well as teen gun suicide.
Two-thirds of gun deaths are gun suicides; with so many people being isolated, this is a grave concern. In TX, the gun suicide rate in the most rural counties is nearly two times greater than that in the most urban counties. My FIL who died by gun suicide lived in a rural area.
Families living with a domestic abuser are even more at risk, stuck at home with their abuser; guns and domestic violence are a toxic mix, making a woman 5 times more likely to be shot and killed.
Now, we must also fear that #opencarry extremists will try to intimidate voters at the polls. #ENOUGH!
