I hate seeing self loathing butch lesbians who haven’t put in the work to show up for female homosexual single spaces. This mentality of Judith Butler et tel is what destroyed our community. Rad Fems have upheld my local lesbian community. #butchlesbiansrock https://twitter.com/radiantbutch/status/1315094680401580033
Sociologists would just need to look at the extreme gender roles that media was presenting to the lesbian world back in 2004. They didn’t feature one butch lesbian. Every single character wore makeup. No butch representation. All lipstick lesbians, even Shane.
The only butch character was Moira.
Moira Sweeney, an androgynous computer technician who moves from the Midwest with Jenny (Mia Kirshner). Over the course of the season, Moira comes out as a trans man, adopting the name Max Sweeney.

And even our butch lesbian Moira didn’t date lesbians who were all femmes, she had a relationship with a bisexual character Jenny.
The L Word sent the message to young butch lesbians that they didn’t hold a place in the lesbian community. The shows solution was to transition Moira to Max. Showing all butch lesbians that to fit in the world you need to physically opt out of being a woman via hormones.
After the episode of Max coming out played one of my best friends girlfriend decided to transition. This was the beginning of the end of butch lesbians in many lesbian communities. It led to their break up and a divide in the lesbian community of enforcement of stricter, rigid
gender expressions in the community. All of a sudden it was femme lesbians being shown in tv, movies, and ads. Butch lesbians weren’t represented anymore except as of transitioning to present, act, and pretend to be males. Young butch lesbians had no one to as role models.
All of a sudden we saw testosterone creams being given away as samples at lesbian bars. A new fad had hit the lesbian scene. You could choose to be hyper feminine or choose to opt out of your sex class by using chemicals to alter your physical appearance. This is marketing 101.
So instead of blaming RadFem lesbians who have actually been fighting to be seen, heard and holding our female only lesbian spaces together, ask yourself why you are encouraging that male born persons be included in lesbian spaces. Who does that benefit? Not butch lesbians!
To all the young lesbians out there it doesn’t master if you’re butch, femme, or anywhere in between those gender stereotypes of expression. The only requirement is that you’re born female and love other female born human beings. That’s all it takes to be a lesbian.
And the reason that this tweet by @jk_rowling has so much significance to me is because biological sex is a foundation of my same sex attraction of being a homosexual female. Gender expression has nothing to do with sexual orientation. Biological sex does. Thank you Joanne
