Living in Wauwatosa, a nice American Suburb, I never expected to see a caravan of military Humvees patrolling my street.

The whole armored caravan sped through my neighborhood a few nights ago like something you imagine happening in fascist countries.

I suppose they are here to harass curfew violators, but I do not find their presence comforting or reassuring.

To make matters worse, the Humvees were later joined by a parade of armored police vehicles from surrounding municipalities. Like an occupying force, they invaded our streets in order to assist our own police and national guard in harassing citizens of Wauwatosa.

It appears that the Wauwatosa government and police are waging war against and seeking to intimidate their own citizens.

It is appalling to witness my own police department bullying those they are supposed to protect.

They are snatching protestors and taking them who knows where. They are firing tear gas and dragging people out of cars. They even shot a tosa mom in the face with a “less lethal round” as she sang.

They have criminalized protests against police violence by setting a curfew as pretext and its all so wrong.

I cannot imagine how much this presence is costing us financially as a community.

These actions have inflicted harm upon the Wauwatosa citizens who elected this government to be our voice.

Send these outside agitators - the troops and soldiers and their military vehicles - home.

Fire Joseph Mensah and initiate police reform so we can start making the progress we elect led you all to lead us toward together.
