Hi so Park Jimin just performed “Filter” live for the first times this weekend, and while I always suspected this song was about genderfluidity and gender expression, his performances confirmed it and they were incredible and I must scream about them +
The performances on D1 and D2 varied slightly but here’s D2 and i’ll use some shots of D1 anyways ITS TIME TO TALK ABOUT FILTER CAN I TALK ABOUT FILTER I’VE BEEN DYING TO TALK ABOUT FILTER https://twitter.com/sj9395_/status/1315206679118503937
The opening of jimin looking at a female mannequin brilliantly plays off our expectations- I think most of us expected Jimin to do some kind of sexy het-coded dance with her, only for Jimin to twist it by taking her clothes for himself
A great twist on multiple levels- Jimin also flips our expectation of the woman being someone to desire sexually, and turns her into someone to be emulated
But Jimin takes the woman’s clothes off- they’re not a perfect fit for him. And then the back up dancers come out and we see the brilliant use of color in this performance- gender being black and white
On D1, men wore black and women wore white, and on D2 they switched, but the symbolism stayed consistent. Jimin is given clothes by the male dancers as well, but when he wears those, his moments are controlled like a puppet- his self expression is dictated by others still
Then comes the fastest quickchange i’ve EVER seen where jimin rejects black and white and chooses to express himself in full color, rejecting the trivial gender expression limitations of those around him
Anyways then the song ends and it’s very sexy so the point is i love jimin, i’m so proud of him for expressing himself unapologetically, and i’m so excited to have a nonbinary anthem put out by the BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD??? Ok sksksk stan jimin bye
Also, if anyone has thoughts on the use of the umbrella on D2 I’d love to hear them? Not sure what the significance was there
I SHOULD ALSO ADD that the switching of which color represents which gender also points to the arbitrary nature of binary gender assignment~ https://twitter.com/firehouselight/status/1315330761101242369
