parallels between eren and reiner: a thread

[may contain spoilers]
both of them are stubbornly stuck on possibly childish dreams, but probably something that they consider to be very important to them. eren, to vanquish all titans and obtain freedom for paradis. reiner, to procure the founder and become the hero of the marleyans.
the funny thing is, they both are initially the weakest amongst their group, somehow never matching up to their self-expectations of being the ultimate “hero”.what differentiates them from their comrades is their sense of purpose and passion - a drive to finish what they started.
in rba, bertholdt is fairly intelligent and his titan is the peak of destruction. annie is superior than both of them, both in combat and strategy. he’s not really the best candidate out there and we’ve seen that be voiced out by a lot of the warriors (ex. porco)
in ema too, mikasa is incredibly strong and super smart, while armin’s strategic skills are exemplary. and somehow eren doesn’t match up to either of them.
you would think this would deter them from their goal, but somehow it only makes them more frenzied to fulfill it and become the hero they envision themselves to be.
they both had incidents which triggered this of course and ironically it& #39;s centered around their mothers. for eren, it was his mom getting eaten by a titan. for reiner, it was his mom& #39;s wish to reunite with his father and live happily as honorary marleyans.
however, eren& #39;s goal at that point was a selfish one, it sprung from a thirst of revenge. reiner& #39;s was more for his mother, he wanted to make her proud and happy.
they both have dedicated themselves to being soldiers, weapons in the war and nothing stops either of them from moving on with their mission. that being said, every single battle they face adds to their trauma.
eren obviously has emotional trauma because he is viewed as a saviour of humanity, which is an immense burden in itself. he also has to see and accept countless people die in vain in order for him to achieve his ultimate goal.
reiner’s is probably worse, stemming from the way everyone put him down back in marley. he was traumatised after marcel died, and ever since then has been in constant conflict with who he is, developing a split personality because of it.
neither of them have much self-worth, thinking of themselves as monsters, who probably deserved to die or suffer. eren thought the lowest of himself when he was captured by reiss,
believing that his family and him were responsible for the death of the reiss family, and thus the advent of titans within the walls. even after that, he always carried the guilt of being responsible for countless deaths.
reiner has constantly been told that he doesn’t match up to his comrades, and he’s always felt responsible for both marcel and marco’s death. he was also responsible for the first mission to retake the founder,
so i cannot imagine the guilt and pain he must be feeling. both of them carry huge burdens with them, bearing the responsibility to be the “spear” that attacks the other side, while still protecting the ones they love.
to the opposite sides, each of them is a "bad guy", a villian who is intent on causing destruction to what they hold dear. to their own kind, they are heroes, saviours of their humanities, who will end the opposing evil.
from when they were young, they held on adamantly to their childish dream, which had either been brainwashed in them by themselves or others. as innocent children, it was easy to stay on the path prescribed to them, because it was the right thing to do.
after a point in their mission, they both understood that both sides had flawed people and great people, and to hold a grudge against an entire nation because of the sins of their ancestors, was futile.
they were only taught differently. from a very young age, reiner only knew one truth: the people within the walls were a threat and had to be vanquished. eren too only understood that titans needed to be destroyed, and whoever was controlling them too.
they both honestly just wanted to be heroes, saviours of humanity. somewhere down the line, they both lost sense of who they were, what their actual goal was. and imo, i think this is why reiner understands eren the best, or the most atleast.
i really like the parallels between the two. it shows us two very different approaches to similar characters on either side of the war. i really believe that reiner and eren are the same sides of two different coins, and that it might have an impact on the later chapters.
