Finally got my #BidenHarris2020 lawn sign. I was stepping out the front door with it at the same time my mail carrier arrived. I instinctively stepped in front of the sign to hide it, to avoid making her uncomfortable. Why? (1/8)
Because signs and flags with that other name are everywhere in this ZIP code, here in the ugly red heart of #NY21. Mostly because of how “the libs want to take our guns, and they don’t even know what ‘AR’ stands for.” Odds are a stranger you meet is not a Biden voter. (2/8)
She sets a package on my front step and says, “I’ve got a six-foot one… do you want it?” And I think… a six-foot… package? And I say… sure? And she says, great, I’ve been looking for someone on the main drag to put it up. (I’m near the K-12 school in our rural town.) (3/8)
2 hours later, there’s a new package by the door. What’s inside is in fact 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and glorious. And I am filled with joy and relief at not being alone. (4/8)
Some days later, having chosen a location, I head out to hang up my banner. I notice something new on the front porch across the street. Maybe seeing my sign made them feel less alone too? (5/8)
Another neighbor is in her driveway, chatting with a friend. Typical neighborly interaction is to wave silently and go about our business. Today both women wave enthusiastically, and yell. “Love your lawn sign! Thank you for being so brave!” (6/8)
I cross the street holding my banner and say (standing at a distance), wait till you see what the mail carrier gave me. Next thing you know, we’re working together in my front yard, and now you see this when you leave the high-school parking lot. (7/8)
How are we still afraid of upsetting our neighbors in the face of what's at stake? Hanging a sign I got for free is the actual least I can do. It’s not brave. Won’t change anyone’s vote. I just hope it lets others who still believe in democracy know they're not alone. (/fin)
