It was a brilliant performance of Sandhagen who used his frame and reach advantage to trouble Marlon early on.
Feinting, jabbing to set up leg kicks, switching stances to give Marlon many different looks.
Feinting with his lead hand to pop off a jab in between. Marlon almost caught the naked leg kick and tried to land low kicks on his own but often enough with too much wind up and Cory could comfortably take a backstep to evade most of them.
When Marlon tried to pressure, Cory threw a front kick up the middle to dissuade Marlon& #39;s forward pressure.
Always staying on the outside of Marlon& #39;s lead leg made it easy for him to dodge most strikes as hear leaning back and counter with his own jab.
He overreached and Marlon slipped his hook and initiated the clinch but Cory easily separated himself from it.
Hooking off the jab is something that Cory does really well and he was targeting the body early and mixed it up.
Slipping Marlon& #39;s hook and blocking Marlon& #39;s overhand with his shoulder, taking a step back, switching stances but blocking the overhand again to land a low kick.
Headmovement is Cory& #39;s first layer of defense in the pocket after Marlon& #39;s attacks he circles out and lands a leg kick on his own
The stance switches disguise Cory& #39;s attacks, Marlon expects his jab but Cory& #39;s creativity catches him off guard and he lands a flying knee to the body
Cory prefers to keep his hands low what leads to him being vulnerable in the pocket but also to be his jab unpredictable and come from different angles, this way he sets up his rear body uppercut.
Also always circling out of Marlon& #39;s power side and having an exit route.
Having his hands low has many offensive advantages but that means being also reliant on reflexes to slip punches.
The naked stance switches can also lead to Cory being off balance and rather easily to track down as here where Marlon just follows up.
Cory is retreating in straight lines and Marlon stings him rather easily with a hook.
Stances switches properly done between combos give Marlon problems to read Cory& #39;s movements and making it hard to predict his next attack
He& #39;s doing half the work for Cory by simply retreating w/out directional changes & telegraphing his lead hook by being too front foot heavy.
Cory did also a good job with hip and lead leg feints to throw Marlon off and mixing strikes in between kept him on edge.
The creativity of Cory has almost no limit, he& #39;s so versatile and unpredictable but a fatal flow is that he neglects his defense while being on the offense.
Jab from orthodox, immediately keeping his head off the centerline and landing a rear body kick from southpaw.
The end sequence shows the defensive issues in his offensive mindset.
Just reaching with his lead arm out to land a low kick and follow up with a knee to the body but getting cracked with a lead hook.
Instead of initiating the clinch afterwards he left himself open for a counter.
I saw many saying that Marlon didn& #39;t look completely like himself or insinuating he is shot and I really didn& #39;t see it.
It was imo more Cory& #39;s doing to defuse many parts of Marlon& #39;s game by overloading him with informations like here.
Non committal jabs to set up the straight, reaching out and trying to initiate hand fighting to stance switch and another non committal jab to set up the body kick in the open stance.
Cory was at times too repetitive with his combinations and Marlon got his timing down, caught the kick and landed a takedown but couldn& #39;t really do anything with it.
Rinse and repeat in round 2, just touching Marlon with throw away jabs, switching stances in between and finishing it with a teep to the body.
Cory was having his way but just putting volume on Marlon.
The beautiful finishing sequence, feinting a jab, Marlon aspects a straight afterwards and Cory follows up with a wheel kick that drops him and finishes him with ground and pound.
He was giving Marlon so many looks that the set up to the wheel kick was well out thought.
He actually threw one earlier in round 1 but was not setting it up like he did above.
Forcing his fight on Marlon and finishing such a dangerous opponent in under 3 rounds is more than impressive.
This performance would warrant normally a title shot but as Cory put it rightly, Aljo is more than deserving for his crack at Yan& #39;s belt.
Cory should fight Edgar or TJ in January as title eliminator for the next title shot.
I still stand by it that Cory made Marlon look bad.
He was forcing his fight on him, making Marlon fight at his pace and drew out the reactions with feints and crafty set ups.
Mixing it up from different ranges and swarming him at times.
Cory really knows at times how to fight tall and at the end of his punches but I hope he adds more layers to his pocket defense because headmovement alone isn& #39;t enough at times.
Also being more careful how and when to switch stances.
With this win he manifested his place as top 3 fighter at BW and I can& #39;t wait to see him back in action.
