"I cannot promise to teach you all geology, I can only fire your imaginations" (Adam: on learning)

"nasty forward minxes" (also, Adam. On women)

Back to the Howgills...
Attitudes and time.

A slow Sunday THREAD.

NB Bibles were waved. Rocks were thrown.
After four full sunny days of staying in (working from home). I'd really had enough.

Forecast was grim. The rain started when I shouldered my backpack.

Didn't matter. Alfred Wainwright said we were off to "Arcadia". Sounded good to me.
This reminded me of a house I saw later that day.
Neighbours.
Enough said. Nothing further to add.
I couldn't decide if the old wall was looking after the tree or vice versa. Went the wrong way as a result of daydreaming about it. I'm glad I did. Just turned round and tried again.

Which meant I got to see what I think might be the Dales' smallest bridge?
The walls all looked 'wrong'.
@JRfromStrickley will know what I mean.
I'd been sliding about on rain-slick limestone.
Where's all this stuff come from?

A heavy-breathing bull made me glad of the wall though. Said "Ta-ra Wonkhorn".
My two maps disagreed with each other...
Alfred had drawn his map fifty years ago. The @OrdnanceSurvey had added paths that he hadn't used.

I was looking for a little wooden gate. Alfred's map won. One of many times it did that day.

#DalesRust reminded me of a submarine surfacing.
One of these stones is really slippy. It's Dent's fault*.
I'll leave which stone it is, for you to discover.

*That is a COLOSSAL geology joke. Don't worry if you didn't laugh (see tweet 1).
Alfred had promised me Arcadia but I only found a limekiln tree. And 'something strange in a shakehole'.

Then what I first thought was part of an eye. (It wasn't).

The rainbow's end was in the 'sylvan spectacular' Alfred found and mapped.
Adam (Sedgwick) was an early 'rock' star. He struggled at university at first:

"Here I am grinding away with six pupils. Under such circumstances it is impossible to advance one step. But I am compelled by circumstances to undergo this drudgery"

He believed in Noah's Flood 'til
...Shaly Cleavage (official name), fossils & other discoveries gave him cause to stop, think and wrestle with his attitudes. Charles Darwin was one of his 'problem students'.

The cave "the sort of place that made an old man feel young again" (Alfred), is hidden & now forbidden.
So don't go in. It's not allowed.
Trying to avoid the mud. Nearly disappeared down a sinkhole.

That's allowed, so watch out.

Finally found those trees, Alfred. The two posts were now down to one, so tried to help out a bit there, too.
The old hedge led me to the woods. They never show you these when showing you the bare Howgills.

They're really quite rare round here, so they should.

These are looked after by @WoodlandTrust volunteers.
Bit worried about that cliff, but autumn leaves showed the way down.
Finally got to sit down to rest and read. Started raining again of course, before I finished this chapter @kathrynaalto and my drink.

"Attention is the beginning of devotion"...
Mary was onto something there.

Pay attention.
What the? Oh...OK.
'Took the brakes off' and went the wrong way (again).
On to a 60mph? road...

But then again, I got to see a milestone with a glam lipstick red makeover.

I'd had such a good time I went somewhere else after. Hope you did too.

Have a great week.
