Last year my online shop turnover was £7.5k, probably about 50% of that was profit.

This year, after losing all commercial & live events work I had to pivot my business & have put much time & effort in to shop.

Just tipped over £25k turnover :) https://www.missmagpiefashionspy.com/blog/2020/4/16/how-to-sell-art-on-your-website
Still around 50% profit when you take in to account scanning / giclee printing / website costs / % to PayPal & Stripe / postage etc.

And I’ve spent untold hours working this year so I’m pretty sure it will work out to less than minimum wage. But I’m keeping afloat.
So yes, if you’re an illustrator and struggling then for sure I’d say it’s worth setting up a shop.

I share a lot in Instagram stories & will often know from reactions as to what will sell.

My advice is don’t over think it too much. Just try things. https://www.missmagpiefashionspy.com/blog/2020/4/16/how-to-sell-art-on-your-website
I talk a lot about money, with the hope it’s helpful for other illustrators and creatives.

On Instagram I have a money highlight and show how I’ve set myself a sales target for the year.
Something I find useful...

I also have a feature on my blog called Money Talks, where illustrators share details about their career and also their turnover for the past 5 years.

People are open about support from parents or a spouse, working another job alongside illustration etc. https://www.missmagpiefashionspy.com/blog/2020/9/6/money-talks-sam-rowe
