Me being a music lover is probably nothing unique. There's a world full of music lovers!
There are those who like only one genre of music. There are those who like more than one genre. There are those who like all genres of music. Some like mainstream. Some like underground and independent. Some like a variety of it all.
I personally prefer underground and independent. I like some of the mainstream. You also have those artists who are considered independent; but one or two of their songs may have made it to mainstream radio.
I cannot tell you the last time, I've just turned on the radio in my car and actually listened to it.
When I turn on my radio, it's for the sole purpose of connecting my Bluetooth to Sirius Radio and listen to YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud or whatever music subscription I'm in the mood for.
The one thing I like to do is, when I'm checking out a particular artist album and they have featured artists on their songs, I like to look up the featured artist and find out more about them.
The other thing I do on YouTube, which is something I've done for years is, I will see an artist/song/video and go, Hmm, that looks interesting.  Let me click and see what this is about.  I like randomly clicking on stuff, I've never heard of.
You would be surprised of some of the dope music, I've run across just by doing that.  There are artists that I've purchased their music just by randomly clicking and liking what I hear.
The one thing about me is I don't support a lot of the mainstream stuff.  However, I will support, as much as possible the independent/underground  stuff, providing, the dopeness of it and if I can vibe to it.
Also, a determining factor is the humbleness and attitude of that particular artist.
