Every fiber of my being wants to vomit when I say this but Homer vs. Peter was p hype
Let me explain... so the chicken fights in family guy were always really hype because they were surprisingly well choreographed and a nice change of pace. They also brought a twist to adult animated shows that you wouldn’t normally see, making them extra memorable. (2/???)
But by the fifth time people were sick of it cuz like they had seen it 6 times like what more is there to see. However, by adding Homer, we’re rejuvenating the bit in one major way. We, not only as the audience but as the entertainment industry, have a bigger stake (3\\???)
In the fight. This is two giants in the animation industry going head to head to see who the victor is. Before the fight, Peter insults Homer and that becomes the reason for the duel. The motive behind Homer’s action is to fight for his and his town’s honor. But not only (4/???)
Is he fighting for Springfield’s honor, but something more. Family Guy has genuinely taken jabs at the Simpsons and Homer needs to fight for the Simpsons’ honor. It’s a battle for the fans (what little ones remain.) The fight’s internal narrative goes hand in hand with (5/???)
The external. The fight is also a blast of motion and force that at its peak reflect the passion and energy of many Shonen anime battles.
There are some obvious drawbacks however. The fact that this fight is animated by the Family Guy staff means they’re not used to (6/???)
Animating the Simpsons characters. This leaves many of the characters looking sort of lifeless and dull. Many of the background characters are very obviously, Family Guy characters with a Simpsons skin. Design wise, they feel very uncanny, a strange middle ground between (7/???)
The two shows.
The fight also falls into the same traps as the later chicken fights. It lasts too long, the joke wears off, and it’s no longer funny. By the end, the viewer is bored after watching the same choreography for eight minutes (8/???)
These two elements blend into a problem that’s more subjective. It’s strange seeing the Simpsons characters brutalized like the Family Guy characters. In Treehouse of Horror specials, the gore was very cartoonish and gaggy. It fit the styles of the Simpsons designs (9/???)
But Family Guy’s use of gore tries to go from an overtop the top yet semi realistic use of gore, more reminiscent of an action movie.
This blend leaves many scenes looking strange and uncanny. Some of the violence looks more out of a goanimate video. (10/???)
The fight definitely has it’s problems, and it’s not the funniest scene from either show, but it stands out for being a monument in the animation industry. It was two giants settling a decades long rivalry and the climax of years of waiting. It’s an incredible experience (11/???)
Not only as a fan of Simpsons and an anti-fan of Family Guy, but as a fan of the animation industry. And one with a connection to the industry owes it to themselves to watch this unfold.
