Exclusive: Non-AC coaches to be phased out in all Mail, Express trains: Railway Board Chairman & CEO Vinod Kumar Yadav tells me in an interview.
“It’s a big exercise and we will do it in a phased manner”, he adds.

Key Highlights:
1.
“Once all mail & express trains start running at 130 kmph or more, non-AC coaches will create technical and other problems because of wind and dust” — VK Yadav says.
So is the process of phasing out of about 1,900 mail express trains (cont...)
2.
“In the next two years, all mail epress trains should run at 130 km per hour (kmph) in the golden quadrilateral section and, then by 2025, the speed should further rise to 160 kmph” Railway Board Chairman says.
So there will be practical issues on non-AC coaches
3.
Present sleeper class coach with 72 berths will be replaced by an AC coach with 83 berths.
Thus, the fare will be somewhere between sleeper & AC.
“As the coach will have more berths, we will be able to bring down the fare despite those being air-conditioned,” Yadav says.
4.
So, fare after replacing sleeper class with new AC coaches of 83 berths?
CRB VK Yadav says: “We will fix the fare somewhere between the present AC & sleeper class fares. The trains will continue to have coaches such as AC-1, 2-tier & 3-tier. Those fares will remain unchanged”
5.
@RailMinIndia is also contemplating restructuring of zonal & divisional railways along the same line as the Railway Board.
CRB Yadav says: “In @dfccil_india we have integrated maintenance depots where we have a common pool of non-skilled staff. That’s the way forward.”
6.
An insight of what lies ahead in reforms of zones, divisions...
VK Yadav to me:
“We are planning to restructure in such a way that every zone will have 4 distinct verticals — infrastructure, rolling stock, operation and maintenance, and finance just as it is on the board now.”
7.
@RailMinIndia is building a prototype of a new train set.
“We are developing a prototype of an advanced version of a train set made of aluminium. It is being built in the Modern Coach Factory (Raebareli) and should be ready by 2022” — VK Yadav to me
8.
Another interesting quote from Chairman and CEO of Railway Board, VK Yadav:
“Our existing train sets (of Vande Bharat Express) are good, but they consume more energy”
9.
The Railways’ pension bill last fiscal (2019-20) was whopping Rs. 49,000 crore.
VK Yadav calls it a “historical mistake”.
He adds: “Minus the pension, the Railways is a highly profitable organisation.”
