My fellow #pitchwars participants. If of the 4K of you who submitted w/ crickets in your inbox, now sit questioning every move you ever made to your first chapter and your query letter — can I stop you for a brief moment and help you see things in a different light? Thread 1/
I'll use some of my favorite books and best sellers for this example. Five books: Cinder, Sorcery of Thorns, Throne of Glass, Merciful Crow and Six of Crows.
While all of these books are on my bookshelf as favorites, and sit on several other shelves as fan favorites —
They are not all created equal in my eyes. Throne of Glass was intriguing, but I didn't devour the book until half way through. Merciful crow starts w/ the line "Pa was taking too long to cut the boys' throats." WOAH, that had my attention, but learning the language of the book/
took me another couple chapters. I loved the first character introduced in Six of Crows, but I wasn't sure how that first chapter lined up with the dustjacket blurb. Cinder started right out of the gate with the love interest who was totally swoon worthy.
So if I was a mentor, out of the five I would have 'personally' requested Cinder and Sorcery of Thorns. Now upon reading Cinder further, I still LOVED the story but it was not quite as tasty for me as Sorcery of Thorns — I straight up devoured that book in a night.
Maybe you don't agree, and that is exactly the point I am trying to make.(So thank you). But seriously, our tastes are so different. Give me a world build on magic, and even if your banquet is eating w/ rats, I'm there. B/c that's what I love! All 5 of these books are bestsellers
All five of these books are written with incredible, swoon worthy, drooling talent. But only one can be picked. So don't be discouraged if yours doesn't get picked or even requested. Five amazing books — one pick. You could still be in the five amazing books. #WritingCommunity
