spoke on the phone with the father of a rather young patient I’m caring for in the ICU for 38 minutes using a Korean interpreter today
found myself extremely frustrated as I tried to explain very difficult information over the phone, especially using an interpreting service
found myself VERY quickly humbled with this:
I said, “I am very sorry she has to be here with us. And I promise you that if there is anything we could do to bring her back home to you right now, the way she is supposed to be, we would do it. But for now, we just do the best we know how to do. Do you have more questions?”
and this man, crying, said, “It’s just so heartbreaking to me that my daughter never got married and now you’re telling me she’s paralyzed on one side of her body and she’s never going to be able to walk down the aisle.”
so, yanno, neuro ICU is hard and COVID makes it harder and these are PEOPLE, not just patients
