I don’t understand Asian Americans’ obsession with Asian representation *in the US*. It seems a bit US-centric. There’re (& always have been) so many talented ppl in Asia, why not look to them for inspirations? Just because non-Asians are unaware doesn’t mean we should be. https://twitter.com/viet_t_nguyen/status/1314726201802461185
There’re many Asian rock gods, movie stars, scientists, writers, and artists, in Asia. They don’t need popularity in the US to be cool or good, & we should be the last ppl to think they do. I can’t help but think that’s from subconsciously feeling Asian cultures are inferior.
This is my biggest frustration on cultural identity issues w/ Asian Americans as a fob. We can inhabit two cultures, but u guys seem so eager to be just a sub-genre in the US one. Why do we want to assimilate so badly, when the prerequisite has always been giving up what’s ours?
I know the hurt of being picked on for being Asian. I’ve experienced that too. Fight that prejudice & ignorance but don’t let it get to u coz they’re the ones in the wrong. Don’t use “cool immigrant” examples to prove to them we are cool because that’s a fucked up logic.
And whatever you do please, please DON’T mock fobs for being “too Asian”. The notion one can be too much of something one already is, is ridiculous. I cannot put into words how pathetic that mentality is. It is also no different from the prejudice we receive from outside our race
