although black swan was made before the world became aware of the pandemic, the cruel irony is that its theme has amplified during this period. this came to mind when jimin shared his feelings about not being able to perform. popular art has this way of romanticizing sadness +
for artists. hurt feelings give birth to superior art. which actually couldn't be more of a myth. mental health struggles curb our ability to create. and as the world has shut down, so have our avenues of creative outlet - especially for artists who perform for an audience.
in this scenario - one starts questioning if one is an artist at all, because ure no longer doing the thing you associate with your craft ie performing. it's an identity crisis that black swan refers to as the first death".

i don't mean to make this an intellect max thread but
being an artist myself this pandemic threw me off in odd ways. on one hand i no longer felt the need to keep up with the world, churn out endless content to stay relevant but on the other hand my existence feels like being stuck in a limbo. I'm working but the joy of creating
is no longer there. it makes me question if i don't feel unadulterated joy in art, if this path is even meant for me. after all, aren't artists always thriving- even in pain? the truth is they don't. black swan highlights that v well. art defines you but it also causes grief
and it's sad in the context of performers who aren't being able to perform rn because what they seek refuge in is suddenly something they cannot access. I made a thread about black swan earlier calling it 'radical' and a few people called me out on it. just to clarify
has there been music about artists being weary of celebrity and giving up on their art? yes. have people spoken about musical blocks? sure. but what made black swan truly stand out to me is how it stresses on the fact that mental health care is extremely important to artists
especially in a world where we're no longer creating just for joy but for product consumption. ask the average instagram artist how burnt out they feel. furthermore, the reason I think black swan coming from bts is so amazing is because of the context and perception that exists
regarding kpop being "poor overworked slave-contract" dancing machines. one would think that given the west's narrative, it is risky to seemingly prove their point by making a song about it. but what's admirable is that bts talked about their creative burnout on their own terms.
anyway today's orchestral ver performance and jimin's ankles being tied no matter how hard he tried to spread his wings reminded me of another thing he said recently about his world being reduced to a room bc of the pandemic. it's a sentiment we can all relate to.
we want to dream, spread our wings, travel the world, create art, live our early adulthoods the way we've wanted to and instead an entire passed by, an entire year of youth lost, possibilities lost. the suffocation is natural.
aaah this bec too long sorry. thanks for coming to my SedTalk. stream dynamite.
