As a resident, I remember reading this message from Dr. Robert Hilliard, former Division Head of General Paediatrics at Sickkids. I only met Bob once, but never told him the impact his simple message had on my career and perspective moving forward /2
It made me realize that while teaching 1 trainee may improve the care of a single patient at a given time, that student will pass on that same wisdom to 10 other students who touch 10 other lives. Those 10 pass it on to another 10 trainees, and so on and so on... /3
And before you know, you've impacted the care of an entire generation of children by the end of your career. That is the beauty of mentorship and teaching - it has a direct and powerful impact on patient care. Don't ever forget that. /4
