Countries that offer universal health coverage are so misunderstood in the U.S.

You can provide care to everyone - so no one goes bankrupt - and still have private insurance/private hospitals. Some of these systems are also highly decentralized, like Switzerland.
In Switzerland, residents are required to purchase insurance from private nonprofit insurers
In Singapore, there's a public insurance system for large bills but patients pay premiums, deductibles, etc
In the UK/NZ, there's a publicly-funded system PLUS private insurance/hospitals
