Who wants to hear about how great migrants and immigrants are to the countries and communities they move into? We can take a dive economically, psychologically and from the perspective of children w/ migrant parents.
This is a topic I’m extremely passionate about. I was fortunate to grow up in a district with students from over 52 countries, where over 60 languages are spoken. In 2019 the commencement listed just a handful of them https://www.facebook.com/1766136081/posts/10205950810487140/?extid=0
I grew up surrounded by refugees, fellow first gen kids, illegal immigrants, people who couldn’t speak my language, people who differed from me. Everyday a city bus would drop off kids from the inner city bc their parents wanted them to get a better education.
I went to school with the richest of the rich, the dirt poor, and everything in between. My school district avoided snow days when it could to ensure every single kid had a meal. On days when they couldn’t, they worked extra to provide meals regardless.
Since the start of quarantine the district provided over 380,000 meals. They ask no questions, turn no one away, and provide parents and other caretakers with food as well as the children.
To remove the stigma behind it, they hire actors and former students to dress up as Princesses and Superhero’s. Around half the kids in the district qualify for free and reduced lunch. And they always go above and beyond to make sure everyone is cared for.
I’m going to warn you guys, I’m going to get passionate in this thread. But I grew up in Michigan’s largest district and most diverse. It absolutely made the person I am on every level. And I can’t sit back quietly and not credit migrants for making me who I am.
