Just sent the closing announcement for the latest @OLCToday workshop on Strategies for Live, Online Sessions and the action plans our faculty learners are sharing are all 💯. @karenraycosta and I have now run 4 cohorts of this, pre and during pandemic, and I’ve got some thoughts
1. The context and content has adapted slightly, but important themes remain the same. Start by asking: what is the goal? Is it suited for a live session? Could it be an email or a video?
2. No matter the content and audience, focus on prioritizing active learning and engagement. Don’t drone on about yourself. Do get folks active in the chat. Be personal, be human, give them a reason to care.
3. Read up on neuroscience and storytelling. Brains love stories! Keep things simple. Cognitive load is a thing.
4. Practice. I’ve read lots of books on running virtual workshops and other online events and that’s all great, but we all need to practice...and keep it simple. Maybe slides aren’t needed. Maybe breakouts come later. Maybe invite a friend to practice, and laugh at mistakes.
5. Time management. You’ll be tempted to rush in the name of content coverage. Don’t do it. My best sessions are when I slow down, embrace the awkward pauses. Consider the balance of sync and async and how they support each other in helping learners achieve the session goals.
That’s it. For more, you’ll need to sign up for the next run 😉 in January 2021!
