Didn't need to put this out considering the sacrifices of those who turned up at Berger today for the march, but an erroneous impression has to be corrected. #EndSars
If there was any weakness in the march today, lack of organisation was one. You don't push people into the streets without consideration for their safety or rights of the public
It was clear when arrived at Berger at 8am that there was no attention paid to organisation. If you don't organise, anarchists with a different agenda would take over
On that basis I asked the organisers to recruit a small team of security guys- the big and muscular guys to flank the march and control traffic and manage infiltration
It worked only as far Banex. And a small anarchic group tried to take over and disrupting public flow of traffic; some lying on the road and asking drivers to run over them.
The organisers told me it was a protest march to the Unity Fountain where their demands would be read, including the names of victims of SARS. At the Unity Fountain
The small anarchic group insisted on going to occupy the HQ of @policeng. I told them, having been advised by the organisers that occupying HQ would mean change of plan. Moreso that plans were not made for occupation
I conveyed the position of the organisers to the marchers and put it to vote. The Yes had it. They marched on to the HQ of @policeng
As I was about leaving, journalists who covered the march insisted that we go to the HQ. We drove ahead of the march. Met policemen who were battle ready.
Dayo and I had a conversation with the ACP and demanded that a space be created for the marchers who were on their way. We agreed the far end close the Fed Sec
The marchers arrived and tried to surge beyond the agreed line. The organisers impressed on the marchers to take the kneel, while the police bring down the most senior commissioner to address them.
At that point it was difficult to manage the crowd. Everyone was speaking on top his/her voice. The Commissioner arrived to the commotion
The ACP asked me to impress on the crowd to organise itself, so that the Commissioner can receive the message from the marchers and pass to the IGP.
Everyone was screaming; some had their phones, while screaming and videoing. I asked the crowd to pick their spokespersons and leaders to deliver their message, go round and appeal to the crowd to be quiet.
They said they don't have spokesperson or leaders. I left them to scream "we want IGP". The Commissioner tried speaking, he was shouted down. He left.
The small anarchic group said it was occupying the HQ. Then, the stalemate of four hours began. Police watched while the crowd screamed.
Question I asked is this: how do you change a march to occupy so suddenly without a strategy or plan? How do you occupy when there are no provisions for beddings, canopies, generator or convenience?
How do you protect the ladies when night falls to avoid unsavoury things happening to them? How do you feed the marchers?
All they were interested in was to replicate the Lagos occupation of Alausa which was carefully planned. Rinu and others in Lagos were top-notch in their planning.
If you don't make those provisions, the crowd will Peter out at night and the few courageous ones left will be left at the mercy of the angels of the night.
If lessons should be learned, organisation is one. Two, protesters should be civil. The attacks on Paul Nwachukwu of Channels TV shouldn't have happened. It did.
Again, all of this is expected. When the #EndSars movement has grown to accommodate everybody. It is expected people come with their agenda.
We have lost people in the struggle. May their souls rest in peace. Going forward, let's learn to plan so that infiltrators don't cause trouble that will hurt the movement long term. I greet you all
