since there& #39;s a possibility for & #39;the 1& #39; to be the next single, heres my lyrical interpretation of the song~ a thread https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💓" title="Schlagendes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Schlagendes Herz">
okay this song is pretty much very self explanatory but i just thought I& #39;ll give my two cents on it because why not https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😄" title="Lächelndes Gesicht mit geöffnetem Mund und lächelnden Augen" aria-label="Emoji: Lächelndes Gesicht mit geöffnetem Mund und lächelnden Augen">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👍🏼" title="Thumbs up (mittelheller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Thumbs up (mittelheller Hautton)">
the song, basically, is about someone who& #39;s over their last relationship and is doing good wherever they are now but time to time their mind wanders over to the happiest parts of the last relationship and it makes them think how different everything would& #39;ve been if they tried-
or if the circumstances were different.

"im doing good im on some new shit,
been saying yes instead of no
i thought i saw you at the bus stop
i didnt tho,"

these lyrics basically explain what i said before. they& #39;ve moved on and are happy wherever they are but yet-
they think about their last partner at times and maybe that made them think they saw them at the bus stop, the partner obviously wasn& #39;t there.
"i hit the ground running each night
i hit the sunday matinee,
you know the greatest films of all time were never made,"

this just further explains how the narrator is having a good time in life where they are enjoying every bits of it and are busy with it yet it hits them-
that they& #39;re not enjoying those moments with their partner. that its not them when she would& #39;ve liked it, hence, the "greatest films of all time were never made" basically explaining, eventho their relationship may have not been the best it was still very worth it.
"guess you never know, never know
And if you wanted me, you really should& #39;ve showed"

the narrator is shocked that they ended up breaking up hence the "guess you never know" also adding in that the partner maybe didnt love them anymore and maybe this is why they never tried-
patching things up.

"and if you never bleed you& #39;re never gonna grow,
but its alright now"

the narrator had been hurt so much to the point that it made them "bleed" but it also made them realise and helped them grow and that everything& #39;s alright now
"but we were something dont you think so,
roaring twenties tossing pennies in the pool,
and if my wishes came true,
it would& #39;ve been you"

the narrator clearly mentions that whatever they had w their partner was something very special to them. "roaring 20s" implying-
the happiness and prosperity they felt during the time as the roaring 20s was a decade of happiness and growth after the devastations of wars. i really like this reference for some reason we— tossing pennies in the pool is a trend (?) where it is believed if you make a wish-
doing that they will come true, which takes us to the next part of the chorus
"and if my wishes came true, it would& #39;ve been you" just further proving that they truly wanted their partner. not sure if they want that anymore
"in my defence i have none,
for never leaving well enough alone
but it would& #39;ve been fun
if you would& #39;ve been the one,"

here the narrator takes up some responsibility and thinks that maybe they were too clingy or never gave their partner space which may have led-
to the end of the relationship. takes me back to Me! ngl where taylor talks abt "i never leave well enough alone," but anyways, it just would& #39;ve been fun if the partner was the one the narrator was spending their time and life with.
"i have this dream youre doing cool shit,
having adventures on your own,
you meet some woman on the internet
and take her home,"

over here, the narrator hopes that the partner has moved on as well and is doing great with their life and maybe have settled down as well w someone-
else.

"we never painted by the numbers baby,
but we were making it count,"

this means what the narrator and her partner had was original and they didn& #39;t have to & #39;paint by numbers& #39; which basically means lack of originality and what they had was anything but that
"you know the greatest loves of all time are over now"

the narrator once again tells us that for them the love they shared w their partner was one of the greatest one& #39;s and whatever happened, it was still very much worth it, even tho its over now.
"i persist and resist the temptation to ask you,
if something had been different
would everything be different today,"

the narrator wants to know where it all went wrong as they cant seem to "leave well enough alone" and she wants her questions answered but because-
they& #39;ve both moved on she doesn& #39;t want to risk anything again (possibly the narrator& #39;s happiness me thinks) and resists her urges to bring the past up again.
"but we were something dont you think so,
rose flowing with your chosen family,
and it wouldve been sweet
if it could& #39;ve been me "

this basically explains that they both were so close together that the narrator became a part of the partner& #39;s family and they reminisce
how sweet it would& #39;ve been if it were still them and if nothing had changed.

"in my defence i have none
for digging up the grave another time,
but it would& #39;ve been fun
if you would& #39;ve been the one,"

the narrator tells how she has no reason to bring their past up again-
hence "digging up the grave another time" but they would& #39;ve really liked some closure over what has happened. also the ending in here can be interpreted as the narrator asking the partner to "dig up the grave" of their love so she can get some closure. if that makes sense we—
