I recently interesting life change. I transitioned from being a journalist to a comedian. It's part of my ongoing obsession with audiences and their attention. Here are a few things I've learned from both worlds about the people who read and consume content. (thread)
1. Audiences want content that makes them feel connected to you as a person. That's because they are lonely. Show them who you are. The person you are drives the truth that you share.
Audiences want you to succeed. Show confidence that you are funny/informed and they will believe it. They want to know they are in good hands. You have to show them that.
Tell the truth. Dig hard for it. They need it. The truth is often painful. Take it in the chin like a boxer and share it with them.
Audiences are distracted. Love your distracted audience. Those distractions will push you to be better.
Finally, you will make mistakes. Just like I did with the typo at the beginning of this thread. Keep showing up, even when you are scared of failing. If you are a journalist or a comedian, you are an observer. And your role is to share those observations fearlessly.
