Writing my memoir, I've been reading a lot of creative nonfiction in essay form, and am struck by how much of it comes from the US and how little there is here. There's also a style of narration that draws attention to the writing process itself, a kind of meta narration, coming
out of IOWA CW programme, seen in writers like @carmenmmachado, which joins a discourse of writing being so closely aligned to self-discovery and development which you just don't see explored here. We have some great memoirists, Cathy Rentzenbrink, Marina Benjamin and Laura
Cummings, to name a few, but the discourse around this art form is disappointingly lacking. When I'm compiling texts for my students, I'm aware that the most interesting essays, theory, and podcasts, in the English Language - are coming from the US. We need more of a platform for
#memoir and #CNF in the UK. It's an extraordinary literary form that really pushes boundaries - it's political, and a brilliant outlet for marginalised voices; its keen awareness of the human condition in context of the world we now live gives it an extraordinary universality.
We need more courses and journals promoting this art form @HinterlandNF and @realstoryuk are dedicated solely to it, but we need more! I'd love to discover a podcast, like Between the Covers by @Tin_House It's been such a brilliant resource for my teaching https://tinhouse.com/podcasts/
