Did u know there’s a North American city that for decades has had a low parking MAXIMUM downtown, AND developers can only build HALF that max on their site? For the other half they must give cash to the city to build well located, publicly owned, flexible parking structures. 1/2
And did u know that very strategic parking policy, combined with high parking prices & good light rail transit service (that’s wind powered, by the way), has been the key to that city achieving the highest peak-hour transit ridership in North America?

That city? Calgary, Canada.
The downtown parking policy has changed in recent years, but was ground-breaking & key to the C-Train ridership success & the strong downtown. Today, Calgary allows zero parking residential Centre City buildings & will vote on allowing zero parking commercial buildings this fall.
