If Section 230 was ever repealed, Twitter would be held accountable for everything that is posted on their platform.

Social media companies would no longer be allowed to create their own rules (that are often used selectively) and it would lead to furiously unmoderated speech. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1313511340124917760">https://twitter.com/realDonal...
The user is legally responsible for the content they post on these sites under Section 230.

That doesn& #39;t stop governments pressuring social media companies when it comes to moderating their platforms of harmful speech though.

For example, terrorism and hate speech.
Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites moderate that type of harmful content (not nearly enough but enough to cause little controversy) out of choice though.

Because they know if they didn& #39;t, they are protected under Section 230.

Until those protections are removed..
Which is what they fear most.

Social media companies are able to set the rules however they please (allowed to hold as much bias as they like) and do the bare minimum with regards to actual harmful content.

If this law was ever repealed, this golden immunity would be removed.
Reality comes crashing in. What I& #39;m saying is if Twitter and most of the internet was held accountable for what people on these sites do, they would cease to exist.

The fact these companies need immunity in the first place speaks for itself in regards to how destructive this is.
In my honest opinion, it is no surprise that social media has helped to destroy the fabrics of society (which it has) when you need to give these companies tremendous immunity.

Why? Because they know the task of thoroughly moderating content on these websites is impossible.
What does that give birth to? Harmful self-destructive cultures, radical political groups, foreign election interference and pure narcissistic opportunism.

Section 230 was a way to throw these problems under the rug before social media was even a thing. It worked for a while..
But as time has ticked on, all of these problems have manifested into the real world causing hell for many different people.

Social media is a useful tool, I absolutely agree, but it keeps on being abused by majority of the population who have let it take over their minds.
There is no BALANCE! All of these sites are cesspools of negativity or fake positivity so it& #39;s hard to be positive when I log on to these sites.

I just don& #39;t think this social media shit is compatible with the way we live. I could write lists of reasons. But I don& #39;t need to.
It& #39;s another distraction. That being said, I wouldn& #39;t care if these sites were all shut down tommorow and this law was revoked to allow things to go their natural course.

But I don& #39;t think that& #39;s going to happen.

Trump will most likely attempt to reform Section 230.
If he decides to reform over revoke, it will give the government unlimited power to determine what is allowed to be said on these websites.

Perfect for them. Bad for everyone. It will be like China.. The difference is the rules will change with every administration. CENSORSHIP!
The point is these social media companies know they have a monopoly over the culture with so much power over public conversation. They abuse it.

If you keep Section 230, companies will continue to form blacklists that punish one group of people over another and shape culture.
This is more power to corporations. Still dangerous.

If you reform Section 230, the administration (or the entire U.S. government) has further power over those blacklists more than they do already. This is so much worse.

If you revoke it, they will cease to exist. Best option.
Because keeping these sites alive requires a heavy level of responsibility from administrators, authorities and the populations who use it.

People have proven they cannot be trusted with this amount of responsibility. It is not practical.

That& #39;s my opinion on social media.
Republicans and Democrats are BOTH correct when it comes to the social media topic. They just "pick and choose" what it is they want to be correct about.

Conservative speech is being censored and manipulated more than left-wing speech.

I have seen it with my own eyes.
But Democrats are also correct when talking about how Republicans (i.e., Donald Trump or those who fund him) most likely want control over social media to clamp down on revolutionary anti-government speech.

Social media swings more on the side of The Democrats.
Trump hates it.
Both revoking Section 230 or changing it will create an enormous backlash bringing out some of the very worst people inside these "echo chambers" onto the streets.

Imagine all the people who call 911 over Facebook going down.

Do you really think they won& #39;t go batshit insane?
Add this to the political tensions that already exist (which profit the rich) and you will find that this will be an inevitable outcome in upcoming years even if U.S. politicans choose to simply do nothing about it now.

They will be forced to.

You helped to create a monster.
So that& #39;s my thread on social media, censorship and the legislation which threatens it.

I know it& #39;s not "cool" to speak the unspeakable but it& #39;s real.

I& #39;m 26, I& #39;m old enough to remember a time before social media existed and young enough to have learnt how this shit works.
Also Biden wants it revoked too (likely to regulate it for the interests of Democrats) so this isn& #39;t just a Trump thing.

I will leave this thread here as this will become a huge topic in the future.
