Eye contact is a cultual thing.

Some cultures see it as a requirement, some consider it rude.

Autistic culture considers eye contact optional.

Autistic culture acknowledges that eye contact can hinder cognitive functioning, and that it‘s not required for communication.
Autistic culture considers eye contact an individual thing.

Some of us do it.

Some don‘t.

Some of us like it.

Some don‘t.

Some of us can‘t do it.

Some can.

And nobody tells someone else how to do or not to do eye contact.

Autistic culture is letting each other be.
#AutisticCulture is a thing.

Not just regarding eye contact, but the more you immerse yourself in it, the more you will recognize other traits of autistic culture as well.

Autistic culture is nothing about us without us.
It’s acceptance, accommodation, and inclusion.
#AutisticCulture is not valuing any form of communication above another.

It‘s using, accepting, and empowering AAC, sign language, speech, gestures, pictures, symbols, noises, body movements, typing...all forms of communication the same.
#AutisticCulture is stimming.

All forms of it, all the time, everywhere.

It‘s accepting stimming, defending stimming, making space for stimming, accommodating stimming, supporting through harmful stimming...

Autistic culture is all our bodies free to exist naturally, safely.
#AutisticCulture is direct communication. Honesty.

It‘s saying what you really mean, no hidden agenda, no hidden meanings.

It’s asking questions and pointing out issues.

Autistic culture is not expecting others to know what wasn‘t said, but saying it. Explaining it.
I struggle with being autistic. I really do.

But at the same time I love #AutisticCulture.

I love my community.

I love our shared traits and our culture.

I love that we stand up for each other.
Fight for our existence together.
For our right to exist as we are.

I love that.
I know I have a million more things I could share, but I havn‘t had any breakfast yet and I need to remedy that so...take over please.
