BLACKPINK- Lovesick Girls MV Review

a review thread;✨
BLACKPINK recently dropped their newest album entitled "The Album" and they are not failing us. However we don't just need to sit and watch it like 'okay, it's good.' As audiences, we need to analyze the MV in its deeper details to appreciate the amount of labor they did.
CONCEPT/THEME🎞️
So the concept focuses on four girls having conflicts with their relationship. It is an MV showing how they hate themselves for being in love, but still loving the feeling of high it brings when it rushes up.
The theme centers on hopelessness, emptiness and frustration of loving a person even when you know that what you could get eventually in the end is pain and suffering.
🎥COLORS
The colors of the music video are what excites me the most. It is a combination of neon and grunge colors, which is a complete aesthetic. Since the MV is shot during the night, I think it's a good choice to consider the colors that will 'stand out' also in the dark.
🎬THE SETTING
So this is the most interesting part to discuss. Usually, BLACKPINK MV's are shot in studios, with a structured background. But this is with another twist. They shot in real places outside the studio which includes the rooftop, warehouse, empty lots among others.
💡LIGHTING
The lighting is just the right balance. It is not too bright, nor too dark/monochromatic. This is to signify that the theme is not too sweet or light, yet not too depressive and savage
The theme covers the girls' stories of pain, yet they are still making sense of it, trying to make themselves cheerful and strong in spite it all. So in order to incorporate the sad and somewhat cheer power atmosphere in one, they used a lighting that balances both.
🎞️BACKGROUNDS
Lovesick Girls MV backgrounds are oozing with pleasing aesthetic. This is because neon lights are mainly used. There is a reason why neon lights are used in bars or recreational places at night: they give a glowy, cozy aesthetic, and it was a good choice for the MV
It also fits the theme in such a way that it served as the dawning awareness of the girls to find themselves again. As the saying goes "lights will guide you home", and for this, the lights are the things that make them unite together as love sick personas.
🎬The ACTRESSES AND VISUALS
All four of them have different roles to play with. To start, Jennie played the role of a ferocious girl in a car and a nurse. Rosé on the other hand played a musical sweetheart type of role only to end up crying and broken.
Lisa acted as a helpless romantic at first, only to get brave and savage. While Jisoo, played the role of a strong woman, only to get so frustrated with herself, as her ending scene of being wet tells it all.
All roles contribute to the MV properly, as it all showcased how the story goes in their own POV's.
👚OUTFITS
The outfits correspond to their respective scenes. But in a general sense, their outfits are usually a combination of rare pieces, with criss crosses, cuts, sequined, or double-triple tops in one usually in blacks, checkered prints, lined prints, etc.
The outfits are more on unique combinations which gives the girls an 'unpredictable' quality--- as girls with feminine cheer power and strength overpowering their heavy feelings.
🎬PROPS
The props that really stood out from the MV include musical instruments (Rose's scene), the paints, the shopping carts and goods, the ax used by Lisa, the tattered stickers, and the cars.
Actually I think there are 3 cars being used: for Jennie's scene, Lisa's and finally, for the four of them at the ending part. The props actually make sense because they are all parts of the scenes they are into, and there are nothing unrelated to each one of them.
✨CHOREOGRAPHY
The choreography is so engaging. There is power in it, there is cheer mixed with sadness in it, and it is on point. As usual, BLACKPINK made use of their four tier structured steps, and their arm movements still remained the highlight.
🎥CAMERA MOVEMENTS AND TRANSITIONS
Most of the parts are shot in movement, because it shows how dynamic the plot is, and how the girls are dynamic to their lovesick actions too. None of them are actually calm about it, so their scenes are always dynamic too.
The transitions, however centers around soft shifts, sudden jumps, and subtle flashes (especially in Jennie and Rosé's scene as they fight with their lover.)
🎙️THE VOCALS
The song itself is already jam packed with fast rhythm and high notes. Jennie rocked her vocals and rap together professionally by using her signature whole high voice.
Lisa, is slaying as usual with her killer raps, Jisoo with her stable resonance and soothing diction, while Rosé incorporated a more intense delivery of high notes.(especially the pre chorus, the "over and over" part)
When they all sang together in the chorus, it is such a high note part, which is also fast in rhythm so it's impossible to relax while singing it. It can easily strain an unprofessional singer, but for the girls, it's just so well done. Kudos!
Truly, BLACKPINK has given us another reason to stan them. Of course, it's not just about them, but also to the people behind it all. The composing team, the production team, the crew and the rest of the staff.
Our appreciation is for all of them, for giving us another song, another concept, another unique styles and works, all blended together to give us not only a good job, but the best one.❣️✨✨
