I stand to be corrected but speaking against human rights abuses and injustices is every citizen's responsibility. It has nothing to do with saying #ZanupfMustGo even though we know who the perpetrators of violence are. If you choose to not say anything, then if tomorrow it's you.
I am not forcing artists to say anything but am against the narrative that is being pushed here that they must be exempted from speaking because they will lose their income. So who shld lose their income? Who doesnt have a family to take care?
Why are they treated like a special breed? Everyone is special. Speaking out does not cost artists only. Thande (Mamo)was fired from her job because of speaking out against human rights abuses. She has two children to take care of. Last year l recommended her to a company which-
needed influencers and the person straight up said no. They didnt want to be associated with her because she boldly speaks out against violations. I know she has lost so many opportunities because of what she stands for. I used her as an example to show you that it's unfair of-
you and l to say only artists must protect their income because they have mouths to feed. What about Thande and many others who have lost opportunities because of speaking out? Are we saying others don't matter? And we need to stop hiding behind saying others are activists.
Calling others activists is now a term we throw around to relieve ourselves of our duties and responsibilities as citizens. You cant say they have been called to activism, who called them? Anyway l can go on and on, it's our duty to stand for each other. We are citizens first!
