The replies to this tweet are making me sad. So many people doubting whether testing and treatment figures can be trusted in African countries yet what could have been catastrophic for already vulnerable populations has been managed https://twitter.com/simoncalder/status/1314509337159774213
The head of the CDC praised the overall response across African countries, describing as as "false" suggestions that cases and deaths in Africa were significantly under-reported (see quote in next tweet) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-54248507
"We may not have been picking up all the cases, just like in other parts of the world... but we are not seeing people around the continent falling dead on the streets or mass burials going on" - Dr Nkengasong, CDC, on African response to COVID-19
My heart broke for South Africa at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis - I thought the disease would tear through informal settlements. It ultimately did so in countries like Brazil but not in SA, partly due to declaring a State of Disaster early on https://passiontounderstand.blogspot.com/2020/04/covid-19-state-of-disaster-in-south.html
South Africa's lockdown was sooner than UK's and included a ban on the sale of cigarettes and alcohol. Even when infections peaked during their winter in July and August, the death rate remained lower than UK https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-53998374
Nigeria have had just 1,113 COVID-19 deaths to date. This interview with Chikwe Ihekweazu, director of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, shows how complex the situation is and how African countries are anything but complacent in their approach https://iclg.com/briefing/11853-nigerian-governments-revised-approach-to-containing-covid-19
There are so many stories of COVID-19 success stories across the African continent, in direct contrast to the disaster stories and failings in USA and UK
The COVID-19 crisis is going to get worse worldwide, including throughout Africa, but the response in individual African countries has been measured and robust, in the most part.
Of course, that doesn't mean I can see my family in South Africa 🇿🇦 any time soon because SA likely won't let us in the way our cases in the UK are going
