[thread][ #gdtrial/ #athenspolicestate][1] On October 7, 2020, a huge crowd gathered for the announcement of the #gdtrial in Athens after 5,5 years of court procedures. The verdict in the first degree is that the leaders of the party are indeed running a criminal organization. >
[2] Almost 40 seconds after the verdict was announced to the demonstration, the Greek police attacked, using a water cannon, teargas and flash-bang grenades. Minister of Citizen Protection and the police stated that "they were provoked with 150 molotovs", thus the repression. >
[3] Together with @omniatv we gathered available footage from social media and livestreams, yet we were not able to find any molotov cocktails thrown at the police prior to the attack. Instead, protesters had thrown plastic water bottles and commercially available smoke-bombs. >
[4] As users in #antireport tweets and others like @gavgero and @ThePressProject mention in their own posts, there is no evidence of the police having been provoked, apart from maybe the fact that they didn't welcome the verdict (and we'll get back to this). >
[5] Here's our take on this: and the tweets by Michalis Chrysochoidis, Minister of Citizen Protection:
Now, how many people were there? @dwnews said "more than 10.000" while ERT (Greek Public Broadcast) mentioned around 20.000. This panorama suggests otherwise.
[7] Assuming that the density of the crowd was 3 persons/sq.m (which tbh, seems quite a minimum for everyone that was there), and that the demonstration covered 25.573+ sq.m, the crowd was at least 75.000+, 3 times more than the official number that media present. >
[8] On that note, the Greek police flew a drone over the demonstration, so we are guessing that they will soon release all the footage to the public, to support their claims. [end] Please see next thread re: Greek police - Golden Dawn affiliations.
