Fun fact: The file signature for a VHD file is "conectix" because Microsoft acquired the virtualization tech for VirtualPC (and the team) from Connectix in 2003. They went on to build native virtualization in Hyper-V, which is a clean break ( @WSV_GUY?)

For an idea of how old the VirtualPC tech is, if you look at that image you'll see "Wi2k" which is in the VHD specification to mark the creator of the VHD being a Windows machine. Windows 2000.
History of Virtual PC, before the tidal-wave of security changes in XP SP2, which was a massive alteration in how a lot of stuff worked in Windows. Microsoft was under siege by security meltdowns in their products.
