#bewks Thread for quotes and my thoughts on Cinderella Ate My Daughter. I want to read more about the corporate and marketing aspect in gender roles and it sounds like a good start!
/ As a kid I had some princess toys and watched the usual disney princess movies. I didn't focus on story as much as dresses and fun they had. My sister and I mostly played with our stuffed animals, and soon I got into games like neopets.
/ I've seen posts noting that a focus on beauty has followed women's rights. There's theory on this, but I think it comes down to women having more income and being viable markets for advertisers. Making people feel bad is profitable, after all.
/ This is fascinating! Later goes on to say little kids are an untapped market... love that JoJo Siwa with her bows and uhh jake paul energy.
/ This point is interesting. the market for historical romances must play similar role, letting women escape to "simpler" times with indulgent dresses and rituals.
/ Oh American Girl Dolls! Never had one, but did read many of the books. I apprecite the author noting the appeal to parents (quality, educational) and kids (toys with fun accessories!) Shopping as female identity is sad but true, so often bonding with mom has been the mall. 😔
/ Chapter 3, "Pinked", discussed advertising practices for children's products by splitting markers, and toys/characters marketed towards girls such as Sesame Street's Abby and Zoe, Dora, baby dolls, Barbie, Bratz, etc. Doing some reading on marketing basics would be good.
/ One thing that makes me sad is with marketer's targeting girls with all shopping and loving fashion nowadays, is that it doesn't foster a real appreciation for clothes, or for learning how to sew/make your own. And definitely not fix stuff, no point when they're poorly made.
/ I don't think I'll get into sewing, but videos from seamstresses are fun to watch! Books on the fashion industry and learning about fashion subcultures like lolita sound like fun. Also textile industry is contributing to climate change, though can't recall extent.
/ And when talking about cases of children being raised with less gender stereotypes, David Rheimer is mentioned. The brothers' horrific sexual abuse by John Money is not mentioned, which is a real disservice when bringing up his death.
/ This line is great. lol
/ LMAO, yes, acknowledge genderists are basically children. Love it.
/ This is research by Carol Martin at Arizona State. Really interesting to consider this, especially in context of older women who say they'd transition if they were younger. Gendered marketing and pornography's influence have ramped up, so it makes sense.
/ More on their research; they don't want boys and girls to be exactly same, but to not be limited. Sounds good, but I thought back to women who advocate for girls-only education. I don't know enough, but I'm sure mixed and same sex have their places in the world. BUT +
/ Bringing up stalking and domestic violence in this case is revolting. These DO NOT stem from communication issues. These are cases of maliciousness and usually male violence.
/ Tweets 9-14 were in chapter 4, now in chapter 5. Ma'am...
/ Definitely seen this phenomenon myself! And next quote, that scares me. It's not parentification, but little girls having the burden of their parent's happiness is bad. Parents should be taking care of their kids' emotional needs, not other way around.
/ Wowie just got to apply basic critical thinking about advertising instead of simply ignoring. In the first 30 secs, Ben starts advertising Holo Taco by asking "do you have boring nails?"
18) Doubt he meant it badly and more comically, but 1) ties back into the basic formula of making people feel they need something and 2) hyperaware of their bodies. I keep thinking of the hip dip BS... labelling natural features of (women's) bodies as negative is gross.
19) Also want to put this great response from @ms_hells_bells in this thread about young women, their role in fandom, and not being acknowledged for creating trends . Interesting to consider!
