LRT: Okay, this. I've noticed this but just never really gave it too much though. There's this trend of having Asian characters be half-white or fully Asian characters being thrown in simply because they're the 'easiest' to write. It's really annoying.
Honestly I'm really happy with my Asian characters in that regard. Tofyte is mixed, but I think she's the only one. Azadeh is straight up Chinese but doesn't actually have family and def doesn't come close to the 'honor/family' stereotype. And Kabir + Abra are both Syrian
and they DO come from a very honor-focused, conservative family. But what makes them fun to write is that, while they share those values, Abra is hugely into fashion, modeling, and trends versus Kabir's stubborn nature which believes that's too modern for his lil sis.
Overall, Asian characters in media really need to be better represented. I'd love to see more non-East Asian, not half white, not stereotypical representation. Just people being people. And that doesn't mean half-white POCs have to go away entirely, but we need more too.
It's nice to see characters that our half-Asian, half-white, since it means I can see folks that look like me. But balance is everything and solely having white-presenting Asian characters to fill the POC slot is a very tired trope. Let's do better!
Sorry if this thread was messy or had any misspells!! kinda just typed my thoughts out as I had them
also yes, I'm half-asian. I don't think I've actually ever mentioned that here but in case y'all were wondering why 70% of my OCs are asian
