The Lovell administration is planning substantial cuts to the academic side of Marquette, the institution's beating heart. But let's take a look at where Marquette spends its money.
Administrative costs per student are now higher at MU than Creighton, SLU, or Xavier.
Administrative costs per student are now higher at MU than Creighton, SLU, or Xavier.
Meanwhile, MU's instructional costs per student (including faculty salaries, deans, museums, libraries) have barely budged since 2010. They're far lower than either Creighton or SLU.
Another way of looking at it: Marquette spends 0.44 cents on administration for every dollar it spends on instruction. Its peers (Creighton, SLU, Xavier) spend a *fraction* of that. Xavier spends only about half as much.
In other words, Marquette has had no problem spending money in the non-academic side of the university. Consider this: in 2020, Marquette spent over $15 million on consultants. That's an 88% increase from 2015.
The beating heart of the university its academic core. Instructors, researchers, librarians, lab staff, museum curators. Together with our amazing students, we make this university what it is. We love this place. But to the Lovell administration we're an afterthought.
That's all for our Friday night TED talk. In sum:

Bonus round: A few more things that were irresistible to note.
1. Marquette's administrative spending per student now exceeds the average across all 28 AJCU schools by about 14%.
1. Marquette's administrative spending per student now exceeds the average across all 28 AJCU schools by about 14%.
3. Finally, Marquette's ratio of administrative to instructional costs is now about 15% higher than the AJCU average.
In sum, there's no reason to cut the academic core of #OurMarquette.
