It probably won't happen, but if the #Flames buyout Jacob Markstrom after three seasons, the cap hit in the 2023-24 season will be NEGATIVE because of how buyout cap structure is regulated.
$15m salary remaining for 2023-26, 2/3s spread out over six seasons is $1.667m per season. The salary savings that season ($6.333m) exceeds the cap hit ($6m).
But that one year of cap magic is followed by two seasons at a prohibitive $4.167m cap hit. But it's a wonderful little quirk of both the CBA and the salary structure of the Markstrom deal.
