While there is good reason to believe Regeneron’s antibody cocktail will be a good therapeutic for covid, calling it a ‘cure’ is stupid and dangerous. First of all, Trump’s treatment was an unblinded, N of 1, plus he was given three different drugs. 1/
If he does fully recover, there is no way of knowing if it was because of the antibodies, so claiming that is ridiculous.
Similarly if he relapses and dies it doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. 2/
This is why clinical trials are done with large numbers of patients, because there’s always ‘noise’ in a study, which requires statistical analysis of the results to see if any improvements are significant. 3/
Secondly, even if it does work, it’s not a ‘cure,’ there are no ‘cures’ for viruses. You can only slow them down to give your immune system enough time to fight them off before it kills or debilitates you. 4/
It’s dangerous to call it a cure because it will give a large percent of the population the false impression that covid is no longer a threat, and precautions like masks and social distancing are no longer necessary. 5/
Of course that is the ultimate goal when we have 1. High confidence this drug and those like it are working, and 2. Means of supplying enough of them to make an impact when an outbreak occurs.6/
However this may not be possible while the number of hospitalized patients is still high and now growing. 7/End
