I’ve been hearing a lot of cover songs on the radio lately and, frankly, most have been passable a best. This got me thinking of cover songs that surpassed the original to the extent that they could be considered the “definitive” version of said song. (1/n)
Below I have listed what I think could be considered such a cover song. I don’t mean to imply these are the “best” cover songs, but I think these are demonstrably far superior to the original (2/n).
Here is my initial list, in no particular order:
Hurt - Cash
2000 man - KISS
Green Manalishi - Priest
You Really Got Me - VH
Where have all the good times gone - VH
Helter Skelter - Crüe
All along the watchtower - Hendrix

Already seeing some other great additions. Some I will need to refamiliarize with both versions before commenting. Some I may have already considered. And will comment on where appropriate. I’ll add to original thread where appropriate.
I forgot to mention two things: (1) @FrogLeapStudios is the master of metal covers and I could argue that several could be considered definitive (Africa, Sultan of Swing, Heathens). (2) @DrO_MN is not allowed to troll this thread with THAT Tori Amos cover.
I’ve seen several contenders for Hallelujah. This will need to be sorted. Another song with multiple versions that comes to mind is Proud Mary. We all just giving it to Tina, or is CCR in the running?
