Day 1 of the Sydney Roosters no longer being in contention for the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership: I've decided to rank all the TV scoreboards of the NRL era.
23: 1998 Fox (Top Left of screen)
Not much to say here really. Very basic design, only showing one team. Par for the late 90s.
22: 1999-2000 Channel 9 (Top left)
See above. The latest scoreboard that didn't show both teams.
21: 1999-2000 Fox (Top Left)
First edition where a casual watcher who just turned on the tele will know immediately who both teams are. The white is uglyyyy as though.
20: 2001 Fox (Top left)
Appreciate the colour scheme. Very small.
19: 2002 Channel 9 (Top Left)
Very basic again but it tells you exactly who's playing and has a visible tackle count. What more do you want.
18: 2001 Channel 9 (Top left)
Slick but subtle design. Should've stuck with it in '02. Apologies to Eels fans for the featured game.
17: 2002-2003 Fox (Bottom of screen)
Too dominating, don't like scoreboards that dominate the screen. Marks for counting down, don't know why they didn't just start at 80 instead of specifying first and second half.
16: 2004-2006 Fox (Bottom)
Hate that it's the whole bottom of screen but still don't mind it. Feel that this is where the scoreboards start looking a whole lot more modern.
15: Channel 9 2003-2008 (Bottom left)
This was ahead of its time in '03 but way behind it in '08. The change from 2008 to 2009 shows this. Points for not being a complete eyesore.
14: 2007-2008 Fox (Bottom middle)
Really like this one. Understated but informing. Huge step up from '06. Don't know if the yellow stripes were for a special round or something but prefer the normal one to this one.
13: 2007-2008 Fox (Bottom middle)
See above. Prefer this one because of lack of yellow stripes.
12: 2018 Fox (Top left)
How this got the nod as late as 2018 is nothing short of disgraceful. It wouldn't be out of place in the early 2000's. Thankfully only hung around for one year.
11: 2019-present Channel 9 (Bottom)
I don't know why channel 9 have persisted with such a dominant scoreboard for so long. The art is cool but there's no need for it to be so big. Also don't like how there's no big transition when a team scores.
10: 2015-2018 Channel 9 (Bottom)
See above comments. Just prefer the art/logo designs of this one.
9: 2017 Fox (Very Bottom left)
Like this one, have no idea why they rushed to change it to what we got in 2018. The only one on the list that was in the very bottom of a corner and I like that, not too prominent. The art's good as well
8: 2015-2016 Fox (Bottom Left)
This one's good but not great. It's average. Liked how when a team scored you'd see their score go up one by one.
7: 2013-2014 Fox (Bottom Left)
This is very good and much better than what followed it. The main colour + logo scheme wasn't used enough. Although from memory the Dragons were sitting against a backdrop of plain grey. Yuck
6: 2009-2010 Channel 9 (Bottom Left)
Ahead of its time and a huge step up from 9's '08 scoreboard. The logo display is the best so far. Just a shame the Titans weren't abbreviated as "Tits"
5: 2012 Fox (Bottom Left)
Fox's third best scoreboard. Like the simple touch of displaying the tackle count next to the team who has the ball.
4: 2011 Fox (Bottom Left)
See above. Just prefer how the scores were displayed with the team's colour.
3: 2019-present Fox (Top Left)
Absolutely love everything about this one. Top left a great spot for it. Underrated feature is how the background colour changes depending on the jersey colour teams are wearing. Super easy for neutrals. Let's hope they don't change it for a while
2: 2011-2012 Channel 9 (Bottom Left)
Very good. Only better than the '09 because it has the whole team name.
1: 2013-2014 Channel 9 (Bottom Middle)
The perfect scoreboard. Just looks a million bucks. Also subtle thing; the sides the teams were displayed on changed at half time to be indicative of which way the team was running. Deserves its spot at the top.
DISCLAIMER: Upon inspection I realise a mistake was made with the scoreboards ranked 14 and 13. I said they were used from 2007-08 when they were really used up to 2010. Apologies
