ok so even if the clock theory didnt come true, this is a thread on what it reminds me of in queer art history!
so as we all know, these two clocks appear in the we made it directors cut!
and it immediately reminded me of this: Untitled (Perfect Lovers) by Felix Gonzalez Torres from 1991.
the two clocks are meant to signify a queer couple and we know this because they are two objects that are the same. it is really common in queer art to place two objects that are the same or similar to code for a queer relationship.
some history on perfect lovers: the clocks were always running at the same time (meaning that they were in love and perfect together) until one of them would inevitably stop when the batteries died. at the time, the AIDS crisis was huge and it meant that the other lover died.
obviously I dont think that Louis is trying to tell us that one of them is sick or dying or something but I think its really interesting how the two clocks are a pretty famous piece of queer art history and he had two clocks in the music video!
the clocks represent heartbeats, and for a while they are beating in time together. when they stop, it could mean one died or it could mean that they fell out of sync.
this is the letter that Gonzalez-Torres sent to his boyfriend.
ok that's just my thread from ur local queer history major đŸ„°
also just want to add that we know Louis is a fan of queer art because he has worn a Robert Mapplethorpe sweatshirt multiple times! Mapplethorpe was a really famous queer artist during the AIDS crisis.
I could write a whole thread about how I think some of Mapplethorpe's images influenced the pictures that harry and Louis took of RBB/SBB!! I actually wrote about that for my queer art history class lol.
here is an example: the first picture is Brian and Lyle at Home by Mapplethorpe and the second is what I like to call RBB and SBB at Home :)
ok hope you all enjoyed my queer art history lecture!!
