I still don't think people fully appreciate the mind-boggling magnitude of what took place at the White House: the GOP and the "conservative" legal establishment hosted a superspreader event in the Rose Garden to celebrate the appointment of some extremist judge to SCOTUS.
Everybody who attended was exposed, senators, congresspeople, religious leaders (why were they invited, who knows?), cabinet members, aides, journalists, even apparently children. A lot of them caught COVID. It's still not clear if Trump was in fact the vector. We'll never know.
People in attendance did not wear masks nor did they follow any kind of social distancing guidelines, in defiance of common sense and public health. That in itself was a blaring statement of the Republicans' philosophy: "the virus is for the little people, not for their masters."
That gathering was like a decapitation strike, but self-inflicted out of ideological commitment and tribal stupidity. The one person who was not stupid here was Mitch McConnell, who knows better and stays the fuck away from the White House.
Mister Senator "we're not a democracy we're a republic" Macbook Man constitutional scholar from Utah, on the other hand...
It's an event of historic proportions precisely because it recapitulated and magnified the Republican Party's denials, indifference and carelessness in the face of the deadly pandemic sweeping the world, and its absolute refusal to govern for the common good.
It is, in that sense, definitive. They were in charge, and they failed the country out of incompetence and spite. They demonstrated their incompetence and spite in the most egregious, public manner. They deserve to be obliterated.
In a normal country, no political party would be able to ever come back from such an absolute and *deliberate* disaster.
