This is a loss, no doubt. But if you want to be an ABC journalist, there are plenty of pathways. Here’s what I think is the best one. 1. Work hard at uni to get experience while there. I don’t think I’ve ever checked an applicant’s uni grades. I want to know what you can *do*. https://twitter.com/heyracheddie/status/1314508296238243840
2. Take the casual gigs, the short term contracts. Keep in touch with the people you did your internship with. If we remember you, we’ll be able to call you when we need someone.
3. You’re not just looking for traditional casual news work. Producing live radio is an excellent grounding and it gets your foot in the door.
4. Use your internship, work experience, casual work, whatever to learn the ABC systems. If you can hit the ground running, that’s very useful. P.S. No one expects you to learn Core at work experience - we’re not unreasonable people.
5. Go west! Go north! Go wherever there’s a job advertised. You can’t get a better grounding than a regional bureau. And you can do anything you want there. You’ll get all the gear and be taught to use it to become a truly multiplatform reporter.
6. Again, you’re not just looking for the news gigs. Go for a producing gig in Karratha, if that’s what’s on offer. You’ll have a great time and, if you want to, can move onto a news gig when one comes up. In the meantime, you’re gaining valuable experience.
Finally, if you want the best job in the ABC, set your sights on Rural :-)
