Convert from Christianity here. Part of the disconnect is Christians don’t have to put in effort for their religion. Their days are already off. They go to mass instead of do it at home. Our efforts are misunderstood by Christians as excessive but by other Jews as nothing at all. https://twitter.com/dickiminaj/status/1314383794464415744
For Christians, only excessively religious people do “extra time” on religious things. But for Jews, we need the extra time b/c society only gave Christians that time, not us.
As an early example, my Christian parents were worried we were too religious b/c we did Shabbat at home instead of going to services for an hour. It was impossible to explain to them that they took Sundays off automatically & had access to local churches but we didn’t for us.
Another example, my Christian parents were worried about all the holidays we took off b/c that “wasn’t normal” but they auto had Ash Wednesday & Easter & Christmas off. Our food culture was weird to them but every Cuban restaurant near them serves fish on Friday.
There’s an accessibility to Christian practice & ritual in culturally Christian societies that makes it overwhelmingly easy to opt-in to Christians practice but some many specifically Christian practices are already codified as religiously neutral.
