So I came across a link to the Harrison-Forman collection of photography at the University of Wisconsin which includes photos of Ireland. I’ve found a number of fascinating ones from the 1950s-70s - let’s take a look.
This image is by Harrison Forman (1904-78) & is described as a Dublin Street scene. I wonder, though, if it’s a Clare town? Maybe someone recognises it? I love the old petrol pumps.
This one is also by Forman & is described as waiting for a bus. You can see the excitement of being snapped by an American. Note the girl with the snazzy KLM bag. The coats are groovy too. I think this is Dublin?
Another Forman, this time of St Stephen’s Green. I’ve edited these photos to remove their deterioration over time & increase the contrasts to make them clearer. Most of the photos are labelled 1960-70s
This one, another Forman, may well be of Killarney. Note the outdoor weighing scales. The other facet of these images are so many unique shop signs. It’s a pity so many have gone. Can anyone confirm the street?
This is Westmorland St in Dublin, I think (based on the EBS). That oriel window is still there but the surrounds are an anonymous modern office block. The Bolands van & CIE freight services are fascinating. A Forman photo.
Here’s a familiar sight for any Dubliner - O’Connell Bridge. Note the two ladies sporting fur coats & Nelson’s Pillar. I think this is the 1960s & this is by Forman.
This is quite an image of O’Connell St. You can see the GPO & the number 8 to Dalkey. The now closed Clery’s sported a Rolex outlet. It’s unlikely they did much business!
I think this is North Earl St from the late 1960s based on Boyer’s department store. Another Forman shot.
Another Westmoreland St shot by Forman.
This Forman shot has no details other than that it’s a pub. Does anyone recognise this snazzy bar. Hopefully it has survived.
This shot of Ennis is either by Eugène Harris (1913-78) or Clarence Sorensen (1907-82). Does anyone recognise the people or can suggest a date?
The view down O’Connell St from the top of Nelson’s Pillar. It’s interesting to see that parking was allowed down the middle of the street. It’s either by Sorensen or Harris & dates before 1966.
Another pub shot by Forman - no details of location or subject is given. Could it be Killarney?
This shot is of Trinity College’s old library by Forman & is undated. I think it’s late 1960s & shows that, even then, the librarians were committed to exhibitions.
Here’s the link to the library & it’s great photos: https://uwm.edu/lib-collections/europe/

Hopefully we can help the University by identifying people & locations!
