Let's talk about tonight's Game 5 between the Yankees and Rays. The mound matchup is Gerrit Cole vs. Tyler Glasnow.

But the important thing from an Astros perspective is that the fact that our ALCS opponent is playing tonight is very good news for our boys.
The ALCS is a 7 game series per usual, but with no off-days per concession to the pandemic. It begins on Sunday.

So there are a bunch of games coming up in a short period of time, and only 1 off day for tonight's winner.
This is good news for the Astros because the Yankees and Rays will be compromised in their pitching situation...worse than usual.

Regular rest (4 days) would put Cole (or Glasnow) next pitching on Wednesday, which is Game 4.
Now, if I were Aaron Boone, I would not want to wait that long to pitch my ace, so he might move him up to Game 3...which is 3 days rest, and would be Cole's 2nd straight start on short rest.
For the Rays, Glasnow pitched in Game 2, so don't expect him to go long. We could see Blake Snell, who started Game 1 in both series so far, pitch tonight. That would be ideal for the Astros, as his first start in the ALCS would be pushed back.
And of course, we'll almost certainly see a large number of relievers empty the bucket tonight in an "all hands on deck" game. The more relievers who appear tonight, and the more high stress innings that they pitch, the more problems it causes for the next round.
The Astros will be underdogs in the next series regardless of who wins tonight. So it's nice to have the advantage provided by the schedule and the other ALDS going 5 games. Let's hope it pays off for our boys next round.
